Effect of water absorption on mechanical and wear behavior of polyurea coating for storage tanks

Abstract

Liquid storage tanks are designed to provide safety, facilitate maintenance, mitigate leakage and corrosion, and fulfill various safety requirements at both national and international levels. The failure of fuel storage tanks occurs mostly due to the formation of rust in the interior section of the tank which is a result of an imbalanced concentration of water. The fundamental principles of corrosion prevention consist of the coating’s adherence to the steel surface and its resistance to absorbing water. This investigation aims to assess the effect of water absorption on the mechanical and tribological properties of PU for 90 days. Moreover, the first 30-day period of the experiment reveals a linear correlation between immersion and absorption. The observed pattern, known as the Fickian domain, demonstrates the compatibility of water molecule migration into PU samples, resulting in a significant rise in weight. Nevertheless, after 30 days of complete immersion, the pseudo-stage exhibits a noticeable deviation (non-Fickian domain) as a result of the equilibrium between the PU material and water. Altogether, the outcomes of this investigation indicate that the mechanical and tribological characteristics of water-absorbing PU samples were unaffected for 90 days.
