Abstract
Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler causing leaf blight of Datura innoxia Mill. produced a non-specific phytotoxic metabolite in culture filtrate. The culture filtrate induced severe necrosis and chlorosis on leaves, wilting of seedlings and inhibition of root and shoot growth of germinating seeds. The toxin was isolated from culture filtrate, purified and characterized as tenuazonic acid. The identification was confirmed by ultraviolet and infrared spectral analysis. Tenuazonic acid is a pale yellow viscous substance which could not be crystallized. The toxin was also detected in infected leaves of D. innoxia. The results show patho-physiological significance of tenuazonic acid in disease syndrome.
