Acute nitrobenzene poisoning

A case report with data on urinary excretion of p-nitrophenol and p-aminophenol

Abstract

A 19 year old girl survived a suicidal oral dose of about 50 ml of nitrobenzene, approximately 11 g of which was reabsorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract. Severe symptoms, including the formation of 82% methemoglobin, normalized entirely within 24 days due to quick and extensive treatment. P-aminophenol and p-nitrophenol were excreted in the urine with a coefficient of 0.008 hr-1. The ratio of excreted p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol was 2:1.

Zusammenfassung

Ein 19 Jahre altes Mädchen überlebte die suicidale Aufnahme von ca. 50 ml Nitrobenzol, von denen ca. 11 g aus dem Magen-Darmkanal resorbiert wurden. Schwere Symptome einschließlich von 82% Methämoglobin verschwanden gänzlich während 24 Tagen, dank einer raschen und komplexen Therapie. Die Ausscheidung von p-Aminophenol und p-Nitrophenol im Harn verlief parallel, mit einem Ausscheidungs-Koeffizienten von 0.008·Std-1. Das Verhältnis von ausgeschiedenem p-Nitrophenol zu p-Aminophenol war 2∶1.
