Abstract

Hypoxia and inflammation are vicious cycles and often difficult to point out which signal activates first, and often these signals reinforce in a feedback loop. Inflammation significantly contributes to high-altitude sickness by increasing pro-inflammatory cytokines that participate in high-altitude associated pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary edema, and cerebral edema. Two medicinal mushrooms growing at high altitude, i.e., Ganoderma lucidum and Cordyceps sinensis, play vital role in diffusing cytokine storm observed upon high-altitude exposure, and these fungus exhibit strong anti-inflammatory properties.
