Abstract
Taxonomy, which is fundamental for the delimitation of species, lays the foundation for constructing the tree of life for organisms. Defined as the science of circumscribing, naming, describing, and classifying taxa, the concept of taxonomy was brought about by Carl Linnaeus in 1735, allowing for taxa classification and standardization of taxa names. Molecular advances allowed for the use of DNA for taxonomical studies, bringing about DNA taxonomy and DNA barcoding. Since then, the use of DNA sequences for taxonomical studies has become commonplace for most organisms. Progress in helminth taxonomy is no exception, and in recent decades, DNA sequences have played an increased role in taxonomy. DNA taxonomy, DNA barcoding, and molecular systematics were put into context in this chapter, followed by the progress made in the scientific community. Examples for the molecular identification of the three groups of parasitic helminths, gaps in the progress of helminth DNA barcoding, and practical steps and recommendations for application were also detailed.
