Abstract

We present the development of a waviness evolution model for the stream finishing process. The model, derived along the same lines as that of a previously developed surface roughness evolution model, was tested against waviness experimental data gathered by processing coupons additively coated with stainless steel 410 by laser metal deposition. To complete the study, continuum-based granular flow dynamics simulations were carried out to estimate the media pressure loading on and velocities across the coupons in order to uncover the trends observed in the experimental data. While the model was initially targeted at the stream finishing process, it appears that it is also applicable to other media finishing processes, as there was no loss of generality in the derivation of the model.
