Abstract

Work has been an important part in the life of all humans. Almost half of adult active hours are spent in the realm of productive activities. The importance of quality of work life (QWL) therefore is unquestionable. As the trend in work continue to change, organizations that focus on ensuring healthy working environment and best possible quality of work are more likely to gain leverage and reduce the risk of employee turnover. In recent years the concept of ergonomics has gained momentum as it emphasizes on the relationship between employees and their work environment. Ergonomics has been applied to improve quality of work life, reduce musculoskeletal disorder and increase productivity. The present study is a business case on ergonomics focusing on the adoption and implementation of various wellness and ergonomics based programs at workplace by the global giant, American Express (Amex). The study has outlined some important measures adopted by Amex to prevent work-related risks and injuries such as physical stress, strain, overexertion, etc. By proper physical planning, personalized approach to designing tools and management of the workplace, Amex has succeeded in reducing compensation cost by 80 percent, improved organizational productivity and enhanced job satisfaction at work. This case study reflects a comprehensive analysis of ‘Blue Work’ as work style adoption and technology implementation technique for better business outcomes. Safe and healthy workplace at Amex has resulted in ensuring high quality work life integration thus making it a comfortable place to work globally.
