Abstract
Thymus lies in the anterior prevascular compartment of the mediastinum. Thymectomy is most commonly performed for myasthenia gravis with or without thymoma and thymic tumors. It is important to clear the mediastinal fat completely since ectopic foci of the thymus may be present in the mediastinal fat. Minimal invasive surgical approaches are becoming increasingly popular in view of improved cosmesis and reduced morbidity. Open thymectomy is still preferred for large thymomas. This chapter gives a brief overview of indications of thymectomy, operative approaches, and handling of perioperative specimens.
