Abstract

Effective interprofessional practice is imperative in the delivery of safe, ethical, quality care in today’s complex and ever-changing health-care system. The ability to communicate and function effectively in teams, in addition to an ongoing commitment to provide client-centered care, has been declared essential in collaborative relationships. Interprofessional education (IPE) has the potential to develop these competencies, to foster a mutual respect among health and social care providers, ultimately serving as the foundation for a collaborative workforce that is better prepared to respond to the challenges and complexities of the current health-care environment (World Health Organization, Framework for action on IPE & collaborative practice. WHO, Geneva, 2010). This chapter provides a brief overview of IPE, before providing details about its current context and trends as we look to the future to prepare a collaborative workforce that has learned how to work in an interprofessional team and is competent and confident to do so.
