Abstract
Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a type of infrastructure network, which is used to monitor and collect the characteristics of the environmental phenomenon such as military applications and environmental observations. The fundamental functionality of the nodes in a sensor network is to collect the historical data from the nearby environment and send it to the base station. Network coding is an efficient mechanism used to increase the network throughput and hence performance by mixing the packets from several sources at the intermediate nodes and hence reduces the number of transmission. The proposed protocol is an enhancement of energy-efficient coverage protocol (EECP) for target coverage by incorporating the network coding technique. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol improves the network performance in terms of number of transmissions, energy consumption and throughput by a factor of 63%, 62% and 61% respectively.
