Abstract
The nature of the relationship between the hydrometeorological characteristics of the Caspian Sea and climatic changes in the Northern Hemisphere is investigated in this chapter. An analysis of teleconnections is conducted in section 3.1. Section 3.2 considers whether there are any statistically significant differences (and of what kind) in climatic situations in the Northern Hemisphere during the years of CSL rise and decline as well as in preceding years. Section 3.3 provides more detail on this issue, focusing on the North Atlantic. Special attention is given to the possible causes of the extraordinary rise in the CSL after 1977 (section 3.4). Section 3.5 discusses secular changes in the CSL and their associations with the Northern Hemisphere climate during the past millennium.
