Abstract
Prior to discussing climatic changes in the Caspian Sea basin it is necessary to describe the background against which they occur. Section 2.1, therefore, gives general, or long-term mean, climatic characteristics of the basin. Since these characteristics have been described elsewhere in the literature (see, e.g., Baidin and Kosarev, 1986), we limit ourselves to a brief review in which the relevant climatic characteristics are given.
