Abstract

To assess the impact of refugee immigration, it is essential to understand the nature of Dutch society and the way in which the country was governed. The Netherlands is recognised as one of the more stable societies in Europe, based on a constitutional monarchy and a legislature comprising two houses, the second house being elected by full adult suffrage on a system of proportional representation. Nevertheless, the political structure of the country was, and still is, strongly influenced by the structure of society.
