Abstract

This review emphasizes the determination of global star formation rates in galaxies or parts of galaxies using various observations of the interstellar medium considered as tracers of star formation. “Microscopic” aspects will be partly covered in other review. It should be emphasized from the start that most information we have concerns only the massive stars.
