The Galactic Nucleus at Millimeter, Submillimeter and Far-Infrared Wavelengths

Abstract

This review discusses the impact of recent measurements in the 10 µm to 1 cm wavelength region on our knowledge about the nucleus of our Galaxy (the central few hundred parsecs). The emphasis is on the determination of energetics, physical conditions and dynamics in the nucleus through spectroscopic observations of interstellar matter. A brief overview of the phenomena found in the galactic nucleus (1) is followed by a discussion of the basic interpretation of line radiation (2). As examples, discussions follow of observations of interstellar clouds at scales of several hundred parsecs (3), of the giant cloud and star formation region Sgr B2 (4), and of the galactic center (Sgr A) itself (5).
