Abstract
Astronomers live on radiation. They are like animals in the Zoo, waiting for the food that is thrown in and having to accept what is given. Once per three hundred years a supernova and a handful of neutrinos! No wonder that a thorough understanding of the basics of radiation is an absolute necessity. The radiation is mostly electromagnetic, with photons as the associated particles. Other forms of radiation are not to be ignored: think of the cosmic ray particles, without which the chemistry of molecular clouds would be quite different and probably much poorer.
