Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), that is ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, may have a common genetic susceptibility and environmental factors may determine the development of one or the other. On the other hand, IBD may be heterogeneous or multifactorial. Heterogeneity is suggested by numerical taxonomy1, the existence of different clinical patterns with regard to expression and prognosis2, and the constitution and extent of the histological lesion. Another criterion which seems to suggest heterogeneity is the association with other diseases. Crohn’s disease is associated more often with eczema than ulcerative colitis is, and the latter is more often associated with coeliac disease and other autoimmune diseases3. In this chapter, the following facets are reviewed: the factors supporting a genetic predisposition, the possible genetic markers for disease susceptibility, and some of the environmental factors which may contribute to the expression of inflammatory bowel disease.
