Zusammenfassung

Viele Leistungen auf verschiedenen Gebieten der Zellbiologie wurden mit Nobelpreisen für „Physiologie oder Medizin“, seltener auch für Chemie und für Physik belohnt. Traurige Rückschläge gab es zur Zeit der verheerenden NS-Diktatur, mit einer Verlagerung der Forschung in die USA. Aktuell ist die Zellbiologie in einer Situation, in der sie über ungeahnte Möglichkeiten der Gentechnik verfügt, die sie im Diskurs mit Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften zu bewerten hat.
