Abstract
In habitus with long trunk and tail (Fig. 86 B), over the relatively short extremities and with the highly water-dependent lifestyle, the salamanders and newts exhibit pronounced plesiomorphous traits of the Amphibia and Batrachia. These circumstances again give rise to the widespread difficulty to convincingly justify the “relatively primitive” subtaxa of extensive, supraordinated entities as monophyla.
