Zusammenfassung

Die Sozialstruktur der Volksrepublik China hat seit Beginn der Wirtschaftsreformen Ende der 1970er Jahre einen umfassenden Wandel erfahren. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht, wie gesellschaftliche Akteure im modernen China ihre soziale Umwelt wahrnehmen und welche politischen Einstellungen und Handlungsmotivationen daraus resultieren. Der Aufsatz beschreibt zwei kohärente, in sich weitgehend geschlossene Gesellschaftsbilder, die sich diametral gegenüberstehen: einerseits das Bild einer funktionalistischen Gesellschaft, in der jedes Individuum seinen bestmöglichen Beitrag zum gesellschaftlichen Ganzen erbringt und dabei seines Glückes Schmied ist. Andererseits das Bild einer gespaltenen Gesellschaft, in der sozialer Status weitgehend qua Geburt determiniert ist und der soziale Alltag von einem unerbittlichen Wettkampf aller gegen alle geprägt ist. Obgleich diese Gesellschaftsbilder ganz unterschiedliche Implikationen für die politischen Einstellungen ihrer Träger/innen haben, begünstigen sie letztlich beide eine eher passive Haltung gegenüber der Politik.
