Zusammenfassung
Die nationale Hochschulaufnahmeprüfung, allgemein bekannt als gaokao, ist nicht nur eine wichtige Institution im gegenwärtigen China, sondern auch ein großer Stressor und potenzieller Wendepunkt im Leben junger Menschen. Die Redensart „eine Prüfung entscheidet über das ganze Leben” bringt dies auf den Punkt. Dieses Kapitel liefert eine mögliche Erklärung dafür, warum das gegenwärtige System der Hochschulaufnahme trotz regionaler Ungleichheiten und hoher Intransparenz allgemein akzeptiert wird. Den Ausführungen geht die Hypothese voraus, dass der gaokao unter anderem deshalb eine beständige und stabile Institution ist, weil Schüler/innen und Studierende Copingstrategien entwickelt haben, um damit umzugehen.
Um die prospektiven sowie reaktiven Bewältigungsstrategien junger Menschen angesichts des gaokao zu ermitteln, wurden 19 Interviews mit Studierenden der East China Normal University (ECNU) aus dem Jahr 2012 durch eine qualitative Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Dem Modell von Lazarus und Folkman folgend, wurde zwischen problemorientierten, emotionsorientierten und bedeutungsorientierten Strategien unterschieden. Wie die Analyse zeigt, sind sich chinesische Schüler/innen und Studierende ihrer jeweiligen Position im Hochschulzugangssystem sehr bewusst, hinterfragen diese jedoch nicht. Stattdessen haben sie sich an ihre Umstände angepasst und versuchen, das Beste daraus zu machen: ihr Schicksal durch strategisches Handeln so gut wie möglich selbst in die Hand zu nehmen und Unveränderbares auf positive Weise zu akzeptieren. Um einen theoretischen Beitrag zur Diskussion über Akzeptanz und Legitimität des gaokao zu leisten, werden die Ergebnisse abschließend unter dem Aspekt von agency (individueller Handlungsmacht) in institutionellen Kontexten interpretiert.
