Abstract

Ammann and Safferman (1958) observed that the culture filtrate of Helminthosporium sp. inhibited mitosis of meristematic cells in the onion root. They also discovered that intraperitoneal administration of the same filtrate increased the survival time of mice bearing Gardner lymphosarcoma. Whether or not the same substance was responsible for the activities in the two test systems was however not clear. Pugh, et al. (1962) then prepared some crude concentrate of the antitumor factor from the filtrate of Helminthosporium sp. No. 215 (Culture Collection of the Institute of Microbiology, Rutgers University) and examined its growth-inhibitory property against several lines of ascites tumor cells in mice and against a number of microorganisms. Their results showed that the concentrate when administered intraperitoneally was carcinostatic against adenocarcinoma S3A, Gardner lymphosarcoma 6C3HED, Ehrlich Lettré (hyperdiploid) carcinoma and sarcoma 180. It was, however, not active against any of the four ascitic tumors when given by the intravenous, subcutaneous or oral routes. The material showed no antimicrobial activity against several species of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi and yeasts.
