Abstract

Patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) are at significant risk of developing venous thromboembolic complications. The risk has been estimated to 20% in the absence of any prophylaxis (Knudson et al. 2004). Another review found an estimated risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) of 0.38% among patients with severe TBI (Page et al. 2004). Unfortunately, we only have publications supporting Level III evidence in this high risk population of trauma patients.
