Abstract
Propan-1-ol has bactericidal activity at 60%. It is effective against C. albicans at 85% in 30 s. Some food-associated fungi require at least 5 min exposure time. A mycobactericidal activity of propan-1-ol has not been described. High MIC values indicating resistance to propan-1-ol have so far not been reported. An epidemiological cut-off value to determine acquired resistance has not been proposed yet. No specific resistance mechanisms are currently known for propan-1-ol, no cross-tolerance to antibiotics has been reported. Low-level propan-1-ol exposure (0.5–4%) can increase biofilm formation in S. epidermidis; 0.2–2% propan-1-ol can increase surface attachment in P. aeruginosa. Biofilm development of C. albicans can be inhibited by 2% propan-1-ol. The effect of propan-1-ol at use concentrations on biofilm development and fixation is unknown. Biofilm removal by 60% propan-1-ol is low in S. epidermidis.
