Abstract

Since the report of the first case of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in Lebanon (and in the Arab world) more than 35 years ago, the Middle East and North Africa have witnessed significant changes in the progression of the disease and the key populations affected by this virus. Despite the initial timid approaches in management that were bound by socio-religious limitations, there have been very energetic models of care spearheaded either by individuals or civil society followed up by governmental structures. Although the countries of this region remain at the lowest worldwide prevalence levels, there are concentrated epidemics in several regions. Epidemiologic data are quite difficult to obtain because of the stigma and discrimination that makes persons at risk shy away from testing. Despite the availability of good medical care in many countries in the region, discrimination continues to prevent persons from seeking medical care resulting in suboptimal care in most countries. This chapter outlines the epidemiologic aspects of HIV in the Arab world, discusses some aspects of the management of key populations, and summarizes the availability of medications and current treatment guidelines.
