Abstract

A 49-year-old woman was treated with a FRED (MicroVention) flow diverter for an unruptured superior hypophyseal artery aneurysm. The patient had a previous history of cutaneous allergy to nickel. The procedure was uneventful; however, the patient developed recurrent episodes of right orbital and facial cellulitis. In the following months, the patient was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome and has never returned to work. A presumptive diagnosis of autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome (ASIA) was made. This case illustrates a rare complication of treatment with a metal implant in a patient with a metal allergy. Allergic reaction to the metallic components of endovascular implants is the main topic of this chapter.
