Definition
Aging in place (AIP) is usually defined in the literature as the preference and ability to comfortably live in one’s own home or neighborhood in later life; as opposed to a nursing home or residential care facility (see “Aging in Place”). Aging in the right place (AIRP) is an extension of this definition in response to challenges faced by low-income and frail older adults to age-in-place. The principle of AIRP is to enable older adults with diverse needs to maintain their independence and autonomy in later life and continue to stay socially connected in the place where they live, feel competent and comfortable, and in control (Golant 2008; 2015a).
