Abstract

This chapter reviews literature pertaining to the treatment of pediatric anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behaviors in African American children and adolescents. Generally, evidence suggests that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most efficacious treatments for these disorders; however, many of these studies either do not provide an ethnic breakdown of their sample or have a poor sampling of African Americans. Aside from such limitations, extant literature has identified pertinent sociocultural factors influencing the symptom expression in African American youth (e.g., heightened relevance of somatic symptoms). Additionally, in light of several cultural variables that affect the accessibility of and response to treatment in African American youth, recent studies have attempted to adapt empirically supported protocols to become more respectful of the unique sociocultural contexts of African American youth. Inasmuch, this chapter includes an overview of existing literature in order to provide treatment considerations and future research directions for pediatric anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behaviors in African American children and adolescents.
