Abstract

The Flemish rhetorician Matthijs de Castelein (1485–1550) is best known for his Art of Rhetoric of 1555. It was the first art of rhetoric in the Dutch language, and although De Castelein propagates a traditional, medieval poetry, he tried to relate this kind of poetry with classical poetry and this way paved the way for a humanist approach of rhetoric and poetry.
