Cardiac Surgery Clerkship

Abstract

Heart transplantation remains the gold standard for end-stage heart failure. It has proven to be safe and effective since the original animal experimentation (Lower and Shumway, Surg Forum 11:18–9, 1960). This chapter is focused on the current indications, operative techniques, and post transplantation care related to heart transplantation. Special consideration is given to donor selection and outcomes.
