Abstract
As the American population was evolving into its contemporary profile, the US healthcare system was undergoing a major transformation of its own. Driven in part by the convergence of the social trends discussed in the previous chapter, the healthcare system experienced a series of events that created a continuously evolving enterprise forced to adapt to a changing environment. The extent to which our healthcare system has become ineffective in the face of these changing conditions is reviewed.
