Abstract

The emergence of population health as a guiding force and strategic approach to addressing the health needs of a population is traced to developments over the past 20 years in society and the healthcare field. Within the context of a paradigm shift from the traditional “medical model” to a “healthcare” model, the developments that are driving this movement are reviewed. The implications of these developments for our current system of care are  addressed.
