Abstract
This chapter deals with the importance of the first cervical nerve (C1)—running next to the hypoglossal nerve—and showing its importance during upper airway stimulation. Obstructions of the epiglottis can be solved by stimulation of C1 and the resulting contractions of the geniohyoid muscle. This moves the hyoid bone forward. The medial hyoepiglottic ligament helps to put up the epiglottis in a more perpendicular position. Obstructions on the epiglottic level can be satisfactorily solved by upper airway stimulation.
