Oral Lichen Planus and Lichenoid Lesions

Abstract

Epidemiologically, it is one of the most common dermatological diseases afflicting the oral cavity with an estimated prevalence between 0.22 and 5% of the world’s population and an incidence rate of 2.2%, with a female-to-male ratio of 2:1. The age of onset is usually between 30 and 60 years, with very rare clinical cases in very young and pediatric subjects. Approximately 60% of subjects with cutaneous lichen planus have oral manifestations, while only 15% of patients with oral lichen planus incur cutaneous manifestations.
