Outpatient Hip and Knee Replacement

Abstract

Improvements in the delivery of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) care have allowed for the gradual adoption of outpatient TJA surgery. While initially performed in ambulatory surgery centers, consideration for same-day TJA in the large hospital setting can be considered for appropriately indicated patients, with the goal of improving the overall patient experience. There are several barriers that make the execution of outpatient TJA more difficult in a hospital setting, but with careful planning, it can be a success, providing satisfaction to both the patients and surgeons alike.
