Abstract

Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic procedure that visualizes the tracheobronchial tree by placing an optical instrument inside the airways. The first bronchoscopy was performed by Gustav Killian in 1897 using a rigid bronchoscope to extract a foreign body from the airway [1].

Flexible bronchoscopy (FB) was generated by Shikedo İkeda in the early 1970s using fiberoptic cables which gains its flexibility applicable through the oral or nasal way [2]. The use of sedation during bronchoscopy is controversial, and it may be applicable to increase patient comfort. The sedative drugs such as diazepam, midazolam, lorazepam, morphine sulfate, and fentanyl may be injected intravenously. Lidocaine at 1 or 2% concentration is usually used for topical effects on airways to prevent cough. During FB, sufficient oxygenation supply and hemodynamic stability must be provided for the safety of the procedure [3].
