Abstract

The field of endoscopy is rapidly changing with the increasing diversity and complexity of emerging procedures. With a growing number of surgical and gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopists interested in performing these complex interventions, training in this field and defining procedural competency are also evolving. In other procedural fields, there has been a shift away from time or number-based training toward competency-based education. This chapter will review commonly performed advanced endoscopic procedures and existing frameworks for defining and measuring competence to provide quantitative and qualitative assessment in endoscopic training.
