Abstract

Social reinforcers are a common component of behavior intervention programs for increasing adaptive behavior and decreasing maladaptive behavior. This chapter will provide an introduction to social reinforcers in the form of attention and a discussion of (a) strengths and limitations of social reinforcers, (b) use of social reinforcers for increasing appropriate adaptive behavior within a variety of critical areas, (c) the role social reinforcers play in the development and maintenance of inappropriate or maladaptive behaviors, and (d) factors that influence the effectiveness of social reinforcers. General conclusions and recommendations will also be provided.
