Climatic Changes in the Arctic Zone of Russia and Climate Warming in Siberia

Abstract

Climate changes in the Arctic zone of Russia affect not only the safety of navigation on the Northern Sea Route, but also increase the risks of emergencies in its territories, as well as the living conditions of its population. The aim of this work is to develop a forecast of these changes, based on their causal links with the climate warming taking place in Siberia. To achieve this goal, using the information from the reanalyses ERA-5 and GLORYS12.v.1, we studied the effect of the timing of floods in the estuarine areas of Siberian rivers on changes in the heat balance of the surface layer of water resulting from polynyas. Thus it has been established that the earlier the flood occurs, the less the solar radiation absorbed in the polynya during the period of its formation, which slows down its development. With further warming of the Siberian climate, polynyas in the Arctic seas of Russia will be appearing earlier, causing its subsequent cover by ice again. As a result, the current warming of the Arctic climate can turn into rapid cooling. This process will complicate ice conditions on the Northern Sea Route, but will reduce the risks of many dangerous natural phenomena in the Arctic zone of Russia, caused by a warming of its climate.
