Abstract

William Shutt came to Korea in 1952 with the Royal Artillery. Viewing the war from behind the front line gave William a different vantage point. He watched the infantry clash and the destruction of large artillery shells as they pounded enemy and ally alike. William also talks about the hierarchies in the British military, expressing a dislike for many officers, but singling out one for praise. Like other soldiers, he liked mingling with Americans, Australians, and New Zealanders. He drank and smoked with them, making lifelong friends.
