Definition
Paraphilia is defined as “any intense and persistent sexual interest other than sexual interest in genital stimulation or preparatory fondling with phenotypically normal, physically mature, consenting human partners.” Paraphilic coercive behaviors can be defined as “a distinct sexual preference for engaging in coercive sexual interactions over consensual sexual activity.”
Research on paraphilia and paraphilic disorders has grown immensely, with increasing interest in the association between paraphilias and sexually coercive behaviors (e.g., rape). Existing rapist typology models have allowed researchers to better understand these offenders’ various motivations and sources of sexual arousal, which include sexual arousal as a result of inflicting psychological or physical suffering on a victim or arousal as a result of dominance.
