Abstract

“How lazy we are,” wrote the Joseon reformist Jeong Yak-yong (1762–1836) in 1802. Later known by the penname Dasan, meaning “mountain of tea,” he was criticizing disinterest in machines and manufacturing across Joseon. “The hundreds of techniques and artisan skills in our country were learned from China in the past,” he asserted, “but for hundreds of years we have not developed a plan to learn more, like doing so was censored.” He pointed out that in China “new methods and elaborate manufacturing technologies to make machines are increasing daily.” In contrast, “we don’t discuss this and feel content with the old methods.”1
