Cost Estimates Associated with Diagnosis and Treatment of Endometriosis

Endometriosis and Adenomyosis

Abstract

Endometriosis is a benign gynaecologic condition that is prevalent in the general population. Due to its high prevalence and significant impact on quality of life, endometriosis can be associated with substantial healthcare resource utilization. This problem is compounded by the propensity of patients to undergo multiple unnecessary tests and interventions across a variety of settings before obtaining an appropriate diagnosis or treatment. This is of particular concern in resource-constrained healthcare systems. Many studies have attempted to elucidate the direct and indirect costs associated with this disease to understand the societal burden of endometrosis. Study methodology and limitations in quantifying costs have made it particularly difficult to capture the entire spectrum of costs associated with endometriosis and healthcare expenditures. The economic burden of endometriosis has been previously compared to that of other chronic diseases such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, demonstrating that there is growing concern around how this disease is diagnosed and managed in a manner that is cost-effective. This chapter highlights the different cost drivers and the many hidden factors that play a role in raising the global economic burden of endometriosis.
