Handbook of Dietary Flavonoids

Abstract

Pinocembrin is a natural flavanone found abundantly in diverse flora across various plant families and honey, globally. The purification and biosynthesis of both natural sources using different techniques yielded pinocembrin which demonstrated potent pharmacological properties in in vitro and in vivo models. Pinocembrin displayed significant protection and management of neurological disorders by the unveiling of its action mechanism. Accompanied beneficial effects include antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antifungal, antiviral, antifeedant, homeostasis regulation, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotection, antitumor, anticancer, antifibrotic, vasodilatory, vasorelaxant, vasoprotective, osteoprotective, and antiarrhythmic properties. The absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion pathways of pinocembrin are discussed, while toxicity evaluation revealed that pinocembrin is safe for consumption and administration without adverse effects or accumulation observed inside the body. Phase I human clinical trials disclosed that healthy female and male subjects tolerated pinocembrin injection well. There were no commercialized pinocembrin-related products, yet numerous patents documented advantageous inventions of pinocembrin in the food, pharmaceutical, medical, cosmetic, and production industries. Overall, this chapter provides a comprehensive insight into the bioactive dietary flavanone and suggests that pinocembrin is a promising phytochemical in functional food ingredient development and drug discovery in health care applications.
