Abstract

Lung cancer remains a malignancy in which patients with metastatic disease have a much poorer prognosis compared to those without metastatic disease. With the majority of patients presenting with advanced or metastatic disease, knowledge of the process of metastasis and clinical management is critical. With advancements in therapy, numerous guideline changes have occurred in the past decade. The main aim of this chapter is to shed light on some of the less commonly answered questions about lung cancer metastasis. The chapter discusses the processes behind lung cancer metastasis and the tendency for certain histological types to metastasize to certain organs. The chapter then focuses on diagnosing and managing lung cancer metastasis to lymph nodes and to distant organs, with emphasis on small cell versus non-small cell lung carcinoma. The chapter ends with a brief description of oncological indications for pulmonary metastasectomy.
