Abstract

The use of recreational inhalants is exceedingly common in the United States with over 14% of Americans reporting that they have ever tried electronic (e-)cigarettes alone. The prevalence of recreational inhalant use has been increasing in the adolescent and young adult population raising concerns about the potential long-term public health consequences. While data is still emerging about the effects of newer recreational inhalants, such as e-cigarettes, it is clear that the use of inhalants comes with a cost. This chapter will discuss the potential complications of recreational inhalants as it relates to lung health, specifically reviewing pulmonary disease secondary to the use of e-cigarettes, marijuana, hookah, cocaine, methamphetamines, and other common illicit and commercial inhalants. Both acute and chronic complications of these recreational inhalants will be discussed, including the recent epidemic of e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI). Where known, the mechanisms leading to lung injury will be reviewed. Finally, given an overall paucity of large studies examining the pulmonary consequences of illicit and commercial recreational inhalants, areas for future research will be highlighted.
