Abstract

Uterine fibroids are benign monoclonal tumours of the smooth muscle cells of the uterus. Most women with uterine fibroids are asymptomatic, but sometimes symptoms such as abnormal uterine bleeding, urinary frequency, pelvic pressure and pain, infertility, and rarely constipation might arise, necessitating treatment. The precise impact of fibroids on fertility is unknown. Submucous fibroids have however been demonstrated to impair fertility. Fibroids can be surgically removed via a laparotomy, laparoscopy, or hysteroscopy. Laparoscopic myomectomy has numerous advantages over open myomectomy. Proper patient selection is key to an effective and safe surgery. Laparoscopic myomectomy is primarily for the removal of intramural and subserous fibroids. Morcellation within a retrieval bag helps reduce the dissemination of fibroid tissues within the abdominal cavity. A morcellator should not be used in suspected cases of malignancy.
