Abstract

Bile is an important substrate produced by the liver for the purpose of digesting fats. Bile is produced in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Once stimulated by a hormonal signal, bile in the gallbladder is released into the cystic duct and travels into the common bile duct, which ultimately empties into the duodenum. The obstruction of bile outflow anywhere along the biliary tree can lead to serious medical complications. Prompt recognition of the signs of obstruction and subsequent decompression of the biliary system can provide symptomatic relief and prevent further complications. Many percutaneous biliary interventions exist, which can provide minimally invasive means to decompress and relieve obstructions within the biliary system.
