Advances in Celiac Disease

Abstract

Regular follow-up of patients with CD is associated with better GFD compliance and improved long-term prognosis. Despite its recognized importance, monitoring patients with CD is challenging, due to significant gaps in scientific knowledge and the consequent lack of evidence-based practice guidelines. Management of patients with CD varies worldwide, being influenced by expert opinions and local experience. This chapter addresses the available evidence concerning the main aspects of the follow-up of children/ adolescents with CD, namely: clinical evaluation and its periodicity, assessment of compliance, nutritional status, bone health, comorbidities, prevention of complications and vaccine-preventable diseases, as well as quality of life related issues and transition to adult-care. Emerging non-invasive biomarkers that may assist in the management of CD and their potential usefulness are also discussed. Although the optimal management of children with CD is not yet established, by reviewing the available scientific evidence, this chapter aims to assist health care providers in improving their follow-up practices, ensuring the optimal health and quality of life of their patients.
