Abstract
The arrival of Chinese porcelain in Europe in the 14th Century as diplomatic gifts. Attempts made to emulate the imported porcelain by early European manufacturers: historical resumes of the earliest porcelain manufactories in Europe, their founders and compositional details where available, commencing with the earliest manufactory in Florence in 1580, followed by others in England, France and Germany. A selection of important continental European manufactories in Spain, Austria, Italy, Bohemia, Russia, the Netherlands and Switzerland illustrates the growth of porcelain production in Europe from the 18th into the 19th Centuries and showing their variability in composition.
